Swanson, Allison, Scott, Hicks, Glasgow Take Opening Night Wins
April 23, 2016

WAYNESFEILD, Ohio (4/23/16) – The 2016 season opener at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio was a playground for a fleet of rookie drivers looking to get their start in the dirt racing arena.  Drivers, some as young as thirteen years of age, flocked to the small town of Waynesfield for a season opener filled with nothing short of excitement and fun.

The Satellite Connections Non Wing Sprint Cars was a mixed field of rookie and veterans trying to set themselves up early in the point standings.  Mike Miller and Kyle Simon, two weekly competitors, led the field of 19 to the opener green flag.  Mike “Magic Man” Miller led the field into turn one and led the opening lap.  Kody Swason, who has raced all across the country with USAC, began to make a run on Miller for the lead.  The move was successful as Sawson came away with the lead pushing Miller back to second.  Kyle Simon turned on the jets as he began to make it a three-way battle for the top spot.  The battle would be cutoff for a series of caution flags involving cars in turns three and four.  On the final restart, Swason got a great jump and pulled away from the field.  Sawson, who never looked back, picked up the victory.  Copper Clouse, who came up through the field late in the race, came home second.  Mike Miller finished in third.  Chad Wilson and Dustin Ingle picked up the heat race victories.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints had the largest showing of rookie drivers.  A powerful field of 22 cars signed in to compete with the AMSA series.  After two false starts by rookies Dylan Troyer and Kobe Allison, veteran drivers Anthony Haas and Chase Dunham led the field to green.  Dunham won the drag race into turn one and would lead the opening laps.  Gunnar Lucius and Ty Tilton, both started in row three, got together exiting turn three and brought out the caution.  Both drivers were battling for spots just inside the top five.  Lucius’ bad luck was not over as he rolled the car upside down in the same spot midway in the race.  The bad luck streak for the leaders claimed another victim with just four laps remaining.  Chas Dunham spun around on the back stretch giving up the lead and victory to Kobe Allison.  Rod Henning finished in second and Brad Strunk finished in third.  Strunk, Henning, and Tilton picked up the heat race wins.

In Quest Federal Credit Union UMP Modified action, Tim Cornett and Casey Luedeke led the field of twenty to the opening green flag.  Cornett and Luedeke battled up front for the top spot as the rest of the field stacked up two-by-two behind them.  The field was so tightly bunched together in the opening laps; some would have thought the cars were coming to the green.  The field began to spread out around the 1/3rd mile when Josh Scott, who started on the outside of row four, took the top spot.  Luedeke, now in second, had to continue his battle with Cornett and hold off Bill Keeler who was approaching quickly.  After clearing Cornett, Luedeke set his sights on Keeler to hold onto the runner-up spot.  The pair battled down to the wire but Keeler was just too strong to hold off.  Josh Scott picked up the win.  Bill Keeler came home second with Casey Luedeke coming home third.  Darryl Banks, Zach Schroeder, and Josh Scott picked up the heat race victories.

The Block Insurance Tough Trucks took the track with a strong field of 20, packed with rookie competitors.  North-central Ohio drivers Chris Hicks and Derrick Hole led the field the start.  Hicks won the drag race into turn one and began to pull away from the field.  Brother and fellow competitor Mike Hicks turned on the jets and began to plow through the field from his inside row three starting spot.  Hicks found ways around Hole and Twining moving into the second spot early in the race.  Chris Hicks began to catch lap traffic causing him to lose some of the gap between him and his brother Mike.  With five laps to go, traffic was extremely heavy moving Mike up and down the banking in every part of the track.  The traffic was too great giving Chris Hicks the visit to victory lane.  Mike Hicks finished in second with Matt Twining finishing third.  Gabe Twining, Mike Hicks, and Neal Carter picked up the heat race wins.

The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts rounded out the season opener.  Keith Staley and Chris Tuttle led the field to the green flag.  Staley won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap.  Weekly competitor James Sorrell began to make a charge through the field but was stopped short when he came up on Austin Scott.  Scott, making his Compact debut, made a run for the lead.  Staley was overpowered and began to fall back in the pack.  Nick Glasgow, another driver who started deep in the field, made a charge through the field late in the race.  After a battle with Sorrell and Scott, Glasgow found himself in the lead and taking home the checkered flag for the first time in his five-year racing history.  Austin Scott came home second with James Sorrell taking third.  Sorrell and Glasgow took home the heat race victories.

Waynesfield Raceway Park will be back in action next Saturday, April 30th with a full program of racing from the Satellite Connection Non Wing Sprints, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, Quest Federal Credit Union UMP Modifieds, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts.  Gates open at 4PM with racing action at 7PM.  All the latest Waynesfield Raceway Park news and results can be found online at www.waynesfieldracewaypark.net, on Facebook, and on Twitter by following @OfficialWRP.
