Vaughan Gets First Career Win At Waynesfield – August 30, 2014

The thought of rain mixed with the pressures of tight point battles made the racing action at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio just that much better. Coming into the race, the top two in every class were within fifty points or less. With remaining races minimal, drivers were grabbing at anything possible to get those extra points to make or break their season. Drivers Kyle Simon and Gary Campbell know this fact first hand. Simon came into the weekend leading the Buckeye Machine Non Wing Sprint point standings by just 28 points over veteran driver Mike Dunlap. Campbell is feeling the pressure even more with just a two-point lead over Rod Henning in the Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprint point standings. On the grandstand side, Ralph Skikos made his first ever trip to Waynesfield Raceway Park. Skikos served in the US military and received a silver star for his bravery in Vietnam. This American hero was treated with a great night of racing on a smooth and fast racing surface.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints were first to take the track for 20 laps of action. Ron Kimmel in the 28K and Rob Winks in the 55 led the field to the opening green flag. Winks won the drag race into turn one leaving Kimmel in the dust. Winks built up a slight lead in the early laps turning lap times in the high thirteen-second bracket. The faster the laps Winks turned, the closer he came to lap traffic. With just over five laps in the books, Winks ran into a wall of lap traffic skimming his lead down to virtually nothing. Chase Dunham, Ron Kimmel, Rod Henning, and Becca Stiefel made up positions two through five as lap traffic surrounded Winks. Winks took on lap traffic like a true veteran while the competitors behind him made a run on one another. At the halfway point, Winks no longer was just dealing with lap traffic. Dunham slid up to the cushion and began to make a run on Winks. Lap after lap, Dunham would put a slider on Winks coming up short off of turn four. These unsuccessful attempts allowed Rod Henning to make a challenge for the runner-up spot. Henning found himself in second just before the red flag flew with just five laps to go for a three-car pileup in turn two. The 17 of Gary Campbell, 328 of Becca Stiefel, and the 8JR of JR Wood got together resulting in both Campbell and Stiefel going upside down and landing back upright. All drivers were fine after the crash but towed from the racing surface with severe damage. On the restart, Winks took off and put some distance between him and the rest of the field. Henning dropped back to third on the restart after his 28H went too low off of turn four and up onto the inside berm. Winks would go on to take home the emotional victory. Chase Dunham finished in second with Rod Henning finishing in third. Winks was almost in tears in victory lane looking back at one of his worst race seasons in history. Gunnar Lucius picked up the Foz Speed Partz hard charger award advancing 12 spots in the A-main.
The Buckeye Machine Non Wing Sprints were ready to rumble for 25 laps. Dustin Ingle and Mike Dunlap led the twenty-car field to green. The race into turn one put Ingle in the top spot with Dunlap trying to fight back on the bottom side of the track. Ingle would put his name in the record book leading the opening laps when the red flag flew for the 43G of Rob Guy. Guy’s car went airborne entering turn three sending him end over end riding the protective catch fence. Guy was pulled from his 43G machine and airlifted to the hospital for treatment. At the time of this release, no further details are known on his location or condition. Updates will be available via Waynesfield’s official website and social media channels. The WRP family asks race fans keep Rob in their thoughts and prayers as he and his family work through this difficult time. An extensive red flag followed the incident were drivers were allowed to emerge from their cars while crews regulated tire pressure. On the restart, Ingle led the field into turn one. He would lead the following two laps until the “Magic Man” pulled a trick of his own off of turn four. Mike Miller managed to slide his 82 up to the cushion to get around Ingle for the top spot. A second and final red would fly with just nine laps in the books for the 68G of Tyler Gunn. Gunn’s car bicycled down the front stretch before touching down just past the flag stand. Gunn climbed out from behind the wheel with assistance from track crews and walked away from the scene. Another longer cleanup followed as fuel from the 68G covered the racing surface after the car was removed from the front stretch. Once cars were pushed off for the third time of the evening, Miller led the group to the restart. Miller was so smooth on the final restart that he had a two second lead built up in just a lap and a half. Mike Dunlap in the 2B was fairly quiet in the A-main until the race went under ten to go. Current point leader Kyle Simon did not see Dunlap coming as he flew by on the outside out of nowhere. The running order remained stable giving Miller the victory and a visit to Best Performance Motorsports victory lane. Mike Dunlap posted a second place finish. Kyle Simon bettered his points night coming home third. Luke Hall in the 9N was awarded the hard charger award.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks took the track next for their 15 lap A-main. Larry Fox and Bill Keeler led the field to the opening green flag. In typical truck fashion, a two wide start transformed into a three wide battle for spots third, forth, and fifth into turn one. Fox jumped into the early lead with Bill Keeler chasing in second. Sawmiller and Hicks squared began to push their way through the field early on. Gabe Twining in the freshly painted 25G held his own early on as well even with the added pressure from Roy Miller in the 37. Just before the halfway mark, Keeler began to fall back when he got too high on the cushion exiting turn four. He lost two spots on the deal when the red flag flew for the 9X of Mike Grigsby. Grigsby’s truck took a slight roll on the top side of turn one in the midst of a battle midway back in the pack. Mike walked away from the scene but the truck suffered very heavy damaged. The truck was picked up and removed with all four wheels off the ground because of the heavy damage. Once track crews cleared the track the green flag returned. Hicks squared made a run for the lead that ended up putting them one and two on the leader board. Jerry Sawmiller in his famous number 60 edged his way up to third to challenge the duo for the lead. All challenges were put on pause when the yellow flag flew. Larry Fox, who started on the pole and led the opening laps, lost a tire and portion of his axel exiting turn four. The tire bounced off the outside guardrail and rolled across the track before coming to a rest in the infield. Fox managed to limp his truck to the bottom of turn two where he was towed pit side. With five laps to go, Chris Hicks had to begin executing a plan to get around his brother Mike and hold off a challenging Jerry Sawmiller knocking at the backdoor. Sawmiller tried to push Hicks up the track but came up short and the door being shut by Hicks. Mike Hicks would hold on and take home the victory. Chris Hicks finished in second, Jerry Sawmiller in third. The 23 of Kenny Osborne finished just inside the top ten and received the hard charger award.
The Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds 20 lap A-main followed. Matt Twining in the M1G and Brandon Vaughan in the 34X led the field to Adam Brimmer’s green flag. Twining edged Vaughan to take the early lead. The lead would be short lived for Twining as Vaughan felt the turbo kick in and propel him into the top spot. Two laps would click off the board when the yellow flag flew for the 86 of Drew Smith and the 89 of Bobby Rose. Both drivers got together entering turn two and came to a stop on the inside of the track. The yellow allowed Twining a free pass to catch back up with Vaughan for the restart. Twining’s idea and execution were two completely different things as the M1G began to fall back just after the restart. Twining’s drop made way for Jerry Bowersock in the X to take the runner-up spot. Bowersock made a run on Vaughan for a split second until the yellow flew for the final time for debris scattered throughout turns three and four at the halfway mark. The second half of the race was fully focused on Vaughan and Bowersock as the battle got heated. Bowersock would throw a slider on Vaughan in three to only have it thrown back at him in four. Bowersock came so close to having the lead when it matters but came up just short each and every time. The timing worked right into Vaughan’s favor as he claimed his first every victory. Jerry Bowersock picked up a second place finish with Brian Post, cutting his way though the field, finishing third. Brandon Vaughan was at a loss for words in Best Performance Motorsports victory lane. He was just happy to finally have a win under his belt and something to talk about for the remainder of the season. Matt Westfall picked up the hard charger honors advancing ten spots to finish seventh.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts rounded out the full night of racing with their 15 lap A-main. Current point leader David Yoder and a newly grandfather Jeff Zwiebel led the field to the green flag to get the A-main underway. Yoder won the drag race into turn one shuffling Zwiebel back to second. It was only a matter of time before Waynesfield and compact veteran Justin Durflinger made a run. Lucas Fuller began to slow causing him to pull the 74 into the infield to prevent any further damage to the car. Not even a lap later the yellow flag flew for a car almost going over the banking in turn two. The car went down and back up the banking before heading to the trailer. With Yoder and Durflinger now nose to tail, the restart became super important for both parties involved. Yoder maintained the lead into turn one and completing the first lap back under green. The following lap was when Durflinger executed a move to put his number seventeen into the lead. A late race caution for debris did not allow Yoder to make any type of moving giving Justin Durflinger the win. Harvey Yoder made his way through the field to make Yoder squared take second and third place. Justin Durflinger commented on the professionalism of Harvey and David Yoder by not spinning him coming to the checkered flag. Cody Sanders picked up the hard charger award.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will sit idle next Saturday before coming back alive on September 13th for another King of the Hill tournament. Eight drivers of the Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds will get their opportunity to enter the bracket and race their way to a pole starting spot.
