Swanson, Dunham, Ullery, Sawmiller, Yoder Win On Opening Night
May 2, 2015

The 2015 season opened Saturday at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio in front of a packed house of nothing but race fans excited to have racing back at the high-banked 1/3rd mile.  A great field of cars consisting of WRP legends and newbies filled the pit area with nothing but high-powered machines.  The season opened without a hitch as many drivers found themselves on top with a head start on the 2015 points chase.

The Buckeye Machine Non Wing Sprint Cars were first to take the track for the 2015 season.  Michigan native Joshua Turner led the field to the first green flag of the season with Cody Gardner to his outside.  As the field entered into turn number four to complete the opening lap, Mark Silva went upside down collecting Kent Wolters in the process.  Kent climbed out of his car under his own power.  Mark Silva was alert and talking with emergency officials when he was transported for precautionary reason.  No update on his condition is available at the time of this release.  After cars pushed off for a second attempt to get the race underway, USAC driver Kody Swanson began to make his way through the field.  A second red flag came for the 74 of Drew Rader when his car went upside down at the entrance way to the pit area.  On the restart, Swanson made his move for the lead and gained it with ease.  Swason managed to pull over two seconds away from Cody Gardner at the halfway point.  Late in the race, Gardner managed to cut Swanson’s lead to just a half second but not enough to run for position.  Cody Swanson picked up the opening night win.  Cody Gardner finished second with Mike Dunlap finishing in third.  Kyle Simon picked up the hard charger award advancing ten spots.  Mike Dunlap, Luke Hall, and Mike Miller all picked heat victories.  Kevin Klatte picked up the B-main victory with Toby Alfrey picking up the final transfer spot.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints hit the track next for their 20-lap feature.  It was the tail of two rookie drivers that wanted to just make it into the show.  For teenagers Ryan Barr and Bradley Ashford, they did just that.  Bradley made his first ever Waynefield start by racing his way into a forth place B-main finish.  For Ryan Barr, a lucky break allowed for him to have a spot in the A-main lineup finishing just outside the transfer window in the B-main.  Waynesfield regulars Chase Dunham and Jake Hesson lead the field to the green flag.  Just like the non-wings, the yellow flag flew on the opening lap for the IVO of Andrew Heitkamp.  A second caution later in the race would end the night for Heitkamp.  The new restart line in turn four was a huge benefit for Hesson as he tried to take over the top spot with Dunham coming to a restart.  The move was unsuccessful allowing Dunham to take home the win.  Jake Hesson crossed the line is second but was disqualified by AMSA officials for weighing in 13 pounds under the requirement.  With the disqualification, defending track champion Rod Henning was awarded second with Chris Bounds awarded third.  The Foz Speed Partz hard charger award was given to Brad Racer advancing eleven spots in the A-main.  Racer also picked up the B-main title.  Gage Etgen, Gary Campbell, and Rod Henning all claimed heat race victories.

The Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds rolled out next for 20 laps.  Jerry Bowersock and Chris Ullery led the field to the opening green flag.  Ullery, 2005 track champion, led the opening lap and began to pull away from Bowersock.  Any distance Ullery was able to put between him and Bowersock was gone with cautions and restarts.  By the halfway point, Bowersock began to get his car dialed in.  Any lead Ullery was able to build up was gone allowing Bowersock to challenge for the lead.  Coming to the white flag, Bowersock threw everything he had trying to put a slider on Ullery for the win.  His attempt was close but not enough to propel himself into the lead.  Chris Ullery came home with his first A-main victory in many races.  Jerry Bowersock settled for a very close second.  Brandon Vaughan finished third and claimed the win of the first heat race.  Scott Gerdeman picked up the hard charger award advancing twelve spots in the A-main.  Josh Morton and Chris Ullery claimed the second and third heat races.  Ullery’s win paid out an additional $300 courtesy of A-main sponsor Screamin Zero Racing.

The Block Insurance Tough Trucks were next on the agenda for their 15-lap feature.  Veteran driver Mike Sawmiller and weekly competitor JJ Butler led the field of 19 to the green flag.  Mike Hicks wasted no time working through the field.  Hicks managed to advance from his sixth starting spot up to second by the completion of lap number one.  With Sawmiller and Hicks running one and two, the battle to watch turned to third spot where Bill Keeler and Chris Hicks began to go at it.  Gabe Twining invited himself into the battle making it a three-way battle for third.  Once the dust finally settled, Mike Sawmiller came away with the large margin victory.  Mike Hicks finished in second with Bill Keeler finishing third in a photo finish.  Rookie driver Janice Hunter picked up the hard charger award advancing nine spots.  The Hicks duo picked up the heat race wins.

The night came to an end with the Indian Lake Outfitter Compact 15 lap A-main.  Two compact veterans, Jeff Zwiebel and Keith Staley led the field to the opening green flag.  Staley would lead the opening laps while weaving his way through lap traffic.  Defending track champion David Yoder did what he does best and began to make a run on Staley for the top spot.  The two went side-by-side before Yoder took the lead and pulled away.  By the time the checkered flag flew, Yoder was long gone from the field.  Cody Sanders muscled his way for a second place finish with Nick Glasgow taking home third and a heat race win.  David Yoder was also awarded the hard charger award advancing five spots with brother Harvey claiming a heat race victory.

Racing returns to Waynesfield Raceway Park next Saturday night, May 9 with another full program of racing featuring the Buckeye Machine Non Wings, Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and the Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts.  Pits open at 4PM; grandstands at 5PM.  Racing gets underway at 7PM.  Adult general admission is just $12, kids (11-15) $6 and everyone under the age of ten is free.  Pit admission is just $25.  Keep up-to-date on the latest from Waynesfield Raceway Park online at www.waynesfieldracewaypark.net , on Facebook , and on Twitter.
