Dobie Takes Second NRA Sprint Invader Event At Waynesfield – June 13, 2015

Dobie Takes Second NRA Sprint Invader Event At Waynesfield
June 13, 2015

Mother nature gave drivers, fans, and car owners an open window to get racing action at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio on the track.  Despite morning showers dumping excess rain on the racing surface, track crews managed to get the track worked in and race ready.  Saturday’s race marked the second visit of the season for the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders and a tune-up for the fourth running of the Bob Reynolds Memorial race in early July.

The Buckeye Machine Non Wing Sprint cars were first on the agenda.  The 14 of Cooper Clouse and the 82 of Mike Miller led the field to the opening green.  Turns one and two seemed to be an issue in the opening laps as two different competitors found themselves going up and over the cushion and kicking up a cloud of dust on the topside of the racetrack.  Luke Hall, who started on the outside of row two, found himself with the fastest lap of anyone of the racetrack when the yellow flag flew with just two laps in the books.  Hall’s momentum continued on the restart has he found himself in the top spot into the first corner shuffling Clouse back to second.  Kody Swanson found his way around Clouse for second and ready to challenge Hall for the lead.  This challenge was cut short when Paul Dues spun in the middle of turn four requiring a tow truck escort off the racing surface.  On the restart, Hall got a jump and pulled away from Swanson late in the race.  For the remaining laps, Swanson reeled in Hall before finally taking the lead off a forth corner slide job.  Hall was unable to get back ground giving Swanson the victory.  Luke Hall finished in second with Cooper Clouse coming home third.  Swanson stated, “He is one of the best” commending Hall’s run in his victory lane speech.  Kent Wolters picked up the hard charger award advancing twelve spots.  Luke Hall, Mike Miller, and Tom Rhodes picked up the heat race wins.

The K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders rolled out next for their 25-lap feature.  Jess Stiger and Nick Roberts led the strong field of nineteen to the opening green flag.  Stiger and Roberts went one-on-one into the opening corner before Roberts came away with the lead.  Stiger began to fade back just a bit until Roberts found himself deep in lap traffic early in the race.  The 10X of Dustin Stroup lost control exiting turn four doing a complete 360 before getting the car back underway.  The race remained green allowing Stiger to continue to close the gap.  With Stiger focused on making a run for the lead, Devon Dobie and Kyle Sauder began to close in to make a run on Stiger.  The move was successful moving Dobie and Sauder up to second and third.  Shawn Dancer would bring out the only caution of the race bringing a late restart that put Sauder into the top spot.  Sauder’s luck eventually ran out as his car took turn four a little too hard sending the 83 into the outside wall dropping him back several spots.  That was all Dobie needed to come away with the victory.  Jess Stiger held on for a second place finish.  Dustin Stroup recovered from his early mishap coming home third.  JR Stewart came home sixth and picked up the hard charger award.  Nick Roberts, Jess Stiger, and Luke Hall picked up the heat race wins.

The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts were next on the program.  Dane Arvin and Robbie Tuttle led the field to the green flag to get the A-main underway.  Arvin jumped out to the early lead leaving Tuttle in the dust.  Jeff Zwiebel, who totaled his car one week earlier in a rollover crash, started strong but began to fall back midway through the race.  Current point leader David Yoder found himself in the lead pack ready to challenge for the lead.  Lap after lap, Arvin and Yoder went door-to-door until Yoder was able to pass and close the door on Arvin.  David’s brother Harvey took over the second spot moving Arvin back to third.  The Yoder brothers occupied first and second as the laps began to tick down.  Coming to the white flag, the Yoder duo made contact in a battle for the lead.  David managed to hold on to claim the victory.  Harvey Yoder finished in second with Dane Arvin finishing in third.  David also claimed the hard charger award and heat race win.

With lightning in the distance, the Block Insurance Tough Trucks rushed onto the track for the final race of the evening.  Mike Hicks and Terry Klopfenstein led the field to the green flag.  Hicks and Klopfenstein went side-by-side for the top spot as the opening lap went in the books.  As the lead battle continued, Joey Heyder began to make a run for a spot in the top three.  Mike Sawmiller, who held the third spot, was not interested in moving back a position and decided to put a block on Heyder.  Lap traffic began to come up on Hicks making his job holding off Klopfenstein and Sawmiller that much harder.  Any gap the three competitors had was gone when the lead pack got caught up behind Ray Frutchey coming out of turn four.  Klopfenstein faded back paving the way for Chris Hicks to throw his hat into the battle.  When the dust finally settled, Chris Hicks managed to muscle by Mike squared for the A-main victory.  Mike Hicks finished in second with Mike Sawmiller finishing in third.  Kenny Osborne picked up the hard charger award with both Rollie Heyder and Mike Sawmiller coming away with heat race victories.

Waynesfield Raceway Park returns to action next Sunday night for the third night of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket.  The UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions will headline the Sunday edition of racing accompanied by Waynesfield’s very own Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints.  A charity kickball game supporting the Kick-It foundation takes place at noon in the parking lot open to anyone that would like to participate.  The Kick-It foundation was founded in 2009 to support children’s cancer research.  Kick-It has joined forces with the Jeff Gordon Foundation wince 2014 raising over $600,000 through kickball events at various short track events.  Pit gates open at 3PM; grandstands at 4PM.  Hotlaps get underway at 5PM with racing following at a special 6PM start time.  Additional information can be found online at www.waynefieldracewaypark.net or www.allstarsprint.com .
