Hayslett Gets First Waynesfield Win
August 27, 2016
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (8/27/16) – The 2016 season at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio came to an end Saturday night with all drivers running for double points, a last chance to better positions in the standings. Over 200 pack backs donated by drivers, crews, fans, employees, and sponsors were given away to school aged kids. In addition, 6 brand new bicycles also found new homes ending the 2016 season with smiles all around. The night of family fun was presented by Indian Lake Outfitters.
The Satellite Connections Non Wings took the track for 25 laps of action. Travis Hery and Dustin Ingle led the field to the opening green flag. The drag race into turn one put Ingle into the lead. Kyle Simon made a run on Ingle stealing the lead with four laps in the books. The lead was short lived as a four-way battle developed for the lead. Simon, Ingle, Hery, and Matt Westfall all made runs for the lead. The battled continued for a short period of time until the red flag flew for a crash involving Kevin Myers, Paul Dues, Luke Hall, and Mike Miller. The racetrack was blocked in turn four promoting the red flag. Back under green, Hery and Lee Underwood began to battle for fourth. Luke Hall, who started on the inside of row six, made his way into the top five with just seven laps to go. Hall was a man on a mission jumping into the third one lap later. Matt Westfall led the field with five laps to go. His car began to slow allowing Kyle Simon to take the lead. As the white flag went in the air, Luke Hall put a slider on Simon to take the lead and the victory. Kyle Simon came home second with Travis Hery coming home third. Matt Westfall and Paul Dues took the heat race wins.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints took the track for 20 laps of racing. The field was led to the opening green flag by the 81H of Anthony Haas and the 1H of Korbyn Hayslett. Hayslett took the lead and led the opening lap. The top five began to spread out around the track early as Hayslett began to build up a lead. Lap traffic started to catchup with Hayslett forcing the 13-year-old driver to the cushion. Entering turn one, Hayslett went up and over the cushion causing his lead to diminish. The only stop of the race came in the form of a red flag for the 48D of Dylan Troyer. Troyer’s machine caught fire coming out of turn three. Troyer climbed out from behind the wheel as fire crews tended to the small fire under the car. Back under green, Brad Strunk of Mason made his way into second at the halfway mark. More lap traffic slowed Hayslett up just a bit but allowed him to come to victory lane with his first every Waynesfield win. Brad Strunk came home second with Anthony Haas finishing third. Kobe Allison, Ty Tilton, and Brad Strunk picked up the heat race victories.
The Quest Federal Credit Union UMP Modified 20 lap feature was led to green by current point leader Josh Scott and Lima native Jeff Koz. Scott powered by Koz entering turn one to lead the opening lap. One lap was completed before the first caution of the race flew for the 35 of Tim Cornett. Cornett found himself facing the wrong direction on the track prompting the caution. Back under green, Scott continued to dominate. Scott worked on extending his lead over the rest of the field. Darryl Banks made his way into the third spot as the field closed in on the halfway signal. Back up front, Josh Scott found himself battling with lap traffic as laps began to tick down. Lap traffic was no issue for Scott giving him the win. Jeff Koz finished second. Brent Hole finished third. Scott was fired up in victory lane as he climbed out from behind the wheel on his season performance. Jerry Bowersock, Matt Twining, Darryl Banks, and Brandon Vaughan took home the heat race honors. Bill Griffith and Scott Bowersock claimed the B-main wins.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks were ready for their final race of the year with 20 trucks signing in to compete. Terry Klopfenstein, doing the double duty in the trucks and compacts, led the field to the opening green flag with Bill Keeler to his outside. Keeler won the drag race into turn one and claimed the opening lap. Waynesfield local Neal Carter trailed Keeler in the opening lap until his truck began to slow up on lap two. This allowed the 9X of Mike Grigsby to move into the second spot. With 12 laps in, Chris Hicks moved into second shuffling Grigsby back to third. Hicks would hold second for 5 laps until his truck dropped off the pace and ducked into the pit area. Mike Hicks took advantage of his brother’s misfortune to take the second spot. Hicks did not have the power to take the lead away from Keeler giving him the A-main victory. Mike Hicks finished in second with Mike Grigsby finishing in third. Mike Hicks, Ben Hower, and Mike Grigsby picked up the heat race wins.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compact 15 lap event took the track with Terry Klopfenstein starting his second race from the pole spot and Austin Scott leading the field to the start. Austin Scott took the lead and led the opening lap. Nick Glasgow, James Sorrell, Harvey Yoder, and Justin Durflinger all began battling for spots inside the top five. Scott continued to lead the field trying to extend his lead each and every lap. Lap traffic soon became prominent for Scott as the battle behind him began to heat up. Nick Glasgow made contact with Harvey Yoder exiting turn three which started a contact fest amongst the four battling for position. Glasgow and Yoder came away winners in the battle as they moved into second and third spots. As laps began to wind down, Scott was losing much of the lead he managed to build up earlier. As the white flag went into the air, Glasgow put a slider Scott for the lead. Yoder followed moving Scott back to third as the field came to the finish. Leading just the final lap, Nick Glasgow came away with the victory. Harvey Yoder finished in second. Austin Scott finished in third. Nick Glasgow and James Sorrell picked up the heat race wins.
In the Block Insurance Powder Puff Tough Truck race, Sam Johnson picked up the victory holding off Bridget Brunk, Lisa Carter, Abbey Werling, and Tracy Hower.
