Hicks Takes Waynesfield Tough Truck Royale Win
June 10, 2017
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (6/10/17) – The first “Meet the Drivers” night of the 2017 season took place Saturday night at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio. Fans of all ages littered the front stretch eager to meet and greet with their favorite weekend warriors. Drivers of the Block Insurance Tough Truck also stole the spotlight running at a $400 to win payday. Despite the fan friendly spirt, racing on the 1/3rd was intensive from the drop of the green flag.
The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing sprints took the track for 25 laps of action. Dallas Hewitt and Luke Hall led the field to the open green flag. Hall won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Mat Westfall, making his season debut, jumped into fourth in his red number 54. A caution brought the field to a slow roll. Back under green, Westfall gaining another spot before a second caution flew for the 24L of Lee Underwood stopped in the pit entry way. Underwood managed to get the car re-fired and rejoined the field. On the restart, Westfall claimed third again and began to make a run on the leaders. Luke Hall and Drew Radar began to battle for the top spot with under five laps to go in the main. A caution for the E99 of Gage Etgen coming to a stop exiting turn two setup a dash for the finish. Radar managed to get around Hall to take the A-main victory. Luke Hall finished in second with Matt Westfall finishing in third. Radar dedicated the win to his grandfather who never had the opportunity to see him win behind the wheel of the 74. Kyle Simon and Todd Keen claimed the heat race wins.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints went wingless for the first time this season. The wingless A-main was brought to the start by Cody Downard in the 3D and Chris Bounds in the 65. The first start was not a success as Dustin Downard brought out the first caution. One the second start, Bounds took off and claimed the opening lap. Tayte Williamson moved into the second spot until his 88 blew up causing him to retire from the A-main. A yellow flag followed for an incident in turn four. Back under green, Bounds continued to work on his lead over the rest of the field. Lima’s Ty Tilton jumped into the fourth spot as the field approached the halfway mark. A yellow flag following allowed the field to restack for the restart. The restart was a good one for Brad Racer as he pushed his car into the second spot. As laps began to click down, Tilton began to catch Bounds by working the top side of the track. Tilton’s run for the lead was cut short when a red flag was flown for Brad Racer who caught fire. With the field restacked for 3 laps of racing, Tilton used the restart to his advantage, getting a great jump to claim the lead. Tilton came home with the win. Gunnar Lucius finished in second with Chris Bounds finishing in third after leading a majority of the race. Lucius, Tilton, and Williamson claimed the heat race wins.
The Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds achieved the 30 mark when it came to car count, moving into the bonus money. Cody Basinger and Troy Cattarene led the field of 20 to the opening green flag. Cattarene took the early lead and led the opening lap. JJ Butler was the first caution of the main with just two laps in the books. Back under green, Brent Hole and Basinger started a battle for the third spot. Lap after lap, Hole and Basinger fought for the third spot as Cattarene and Mike Learman played cat and mouse for the top spot. As the field approached the halfway point, Learman found the power to move himself into the top spot. Learman, at one point in the A-main, had a second and a half lead over the entire field. Two cautions followed, one for the 11H of Mike Holbein and the other for JJ Butler put the battles to rest. On the restart, Brian Post made his way into third but could not advance any further in the A-main. In the end, Mike Learman took home the victory. Troy Cattarene finished in second with Brian Post finishing in third. Brian Post, Zach Schroeder, Brent Hole, and Mike Learman claimed the heat races. Matt Twining took home the B-main victory.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks headlined the Saturday program running for a $400 to win payday. Curtis Greca and Kevin Knittle lead the field to the open green flag. The drag race into turn one put Knittle into the early lead. A few laps into the A-main, a three-way battle began to form for the second spot. Mike Hicks, Devon Helmig, and Chris Hicks all battled for the runner up spot as Knittle began to pull away slightly. Knittle’s night came to an end when his truck caught fire with 8 laps to go in the event. Chris Hicks managed to find a way into the lead on the restart. Helmig was nowhere close to being done as he put a slider on Hicks for the lead. The run for the lead was not successful giving the win to Chris Hicks. Roy Miller moved into the fourth spot late in the race. In the end, Devon Helmig finished in second with Frankie Weigt finishing in third. Chris Hicks and Devon Helmig picked up the heat race wins.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts were the final event of the night. Tony Heath and Austin Eaton led the field of 18 to the opening green flag. The drag race into turn one put Heath, making his season debut, into the lead. Heath would hold the lead for a second before the yellow flew for the lil316 of Devon Hower. The cars restacked for the restart. Justin Durflinger got a great jump on the restart and began to challenge for the lead. Durflinger managed to take the spot away from Heath. Nick Glasgow found his way into the second spot early in the main. The 1A of Alison Butler brought out the caution in the middle of the A-main. On the restart, Terry Eaton jumped into the third spot and ready to challenge for the lead. Eaton came, saw, and conquered taking control of the top spot. Last week’s feature winner Brandon McDaries made his way into the fourth spot. One caution would follow before Eaton came home with the victory. Durflinger finished in second with Glasgow coming home in third. Both Terry Eaton and Brandon McDaries claimed the heat races.
Racing moves to Sunday next week as the Artic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions make their yearly appearance at Waynesfield Raceway Park during Ohio Sprint Speedweek. Former NASCAR and dirt track legend Rico Abreu is registered to make his first ever appearance at the 1/3rd mile. The NRA Sprint Invaders are also on the special Sunday program. Gates will open at 3PM with racing getting underway at 7PM.
