Swanson Dominates Waynesfield Non Wing Summer Kicker

WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (6/3/17) – The first big money race of the year for the Non Wing sprint cars took place Saturday night at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio. Non wing drivers from throughout the Midwest gathered for a $1500 to win payday. The atmosphere was that of fun as some drivers threaded the needle to welcome in the summer schedule of racing.
The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing sprints saw 23 cars signing in to compete for the money. The 25 lap A-main was brought to green by the 23S of Kyle Simon and the 21K of Kody Swanson. Coming to the flag, the 25B of Mark Blausey and the 19 of Matt Cooley got together going into turn one. Blausey got the car re-fired but Cooley was taken out on a tow truck. Trial number two to get the race underway was a success pushing Simon, the local driver, into the top spot. Swanson worked the top side of the racetrack and took the lead away from Simon with 22 laps remaining in the main. That pass was just the start for Swanson as he began to pull away from the field. At one point in the race, Swanson clocked a 4 second lead over the rest of the field. Lap traffic began to build forcing Swanson to the bottom side of the track late in the race. Dallas Hewitt slipped into the 3rd spot as laps began to wind down. In the end, Swanson took home the victory. Kyle Simon finished in second with Dallas Hewitt taking home third. Swanson commented on how much he loved racing at WRP and how much fun the track is while in victory lane. Kirk Jeffries, Kody Swanson, and Kyle Simon claimed the heat races. Tyler Hewitt set quick time with 12.657 second lap.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints started 23 drivers in the A-main. The strong field of cars was brought to green by Nick Daugherty in the 14D and Gunnar Lucius in the 22. The drag race into turn one put Daugherty into the lead. Lucius’ car began to smoke as the machine picked up speed. Lima’s very own Kobe Allison began to make a run for the lead. After a few laps of work, Allison took the lead and controlled the field early in the race. As the field approached the halfway point, pole sitter Daugherty blew an engine bringing out the first caution of the event. One lap would follow before the yellow paused action as the 81H of Anthony Haas came to a stop just past the flag stand. Back underway, Chris Bounds and Gunnar Lucius began to battle for the runner-up spot. Neither of them would end up with the spot as a caution allowed Tilton to take second on a great restart under 5 laps remaining. In the end, Kobe Allison came away with the victory. Ty Tilton finished in second. Gunnar Lucius finished in third. Kobe Allison, Rod Henning, and Ty Tilton picked up the heat race victories.
Running for bonus money, the Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds took the track for 20 laps of racing. Troy Cattarene and Brian Post led the field of 20 to the opening green flag. Post took the lead and led the opening lap. A red flag would be thrown early in the race for a gaggle of cars getting together exiting turn four. Jim Post, Tom Conrad JR, and JD Lease were involved in the crash that blocked much of the front stretch. Back under green, Mike Learman in the 4L advanced into the top five with 15 laps to go. As the field came to the halfway signal, the four frontrunners began to battle for position. Jeff Koz in the second spot along with Brian Post in the fourth spot found the fastest line on the track was riding the cushion. Troy Cattarene and Josh Scott took the bottom line. The four-way battle was shaken up when Cattarene was deep in lap traffic and began to fade back in the field. Koz needed a small something to catch Post for the top spot. A late race caution was just the break Koz needed to restack the field. A one lap shootout to the finish was nothing short of amazing with Jeff Koz coming away with the victory beating out Brian Post by 27-thousandths of a second. Brian Post, who led much of the A-main took home second with former track champion Josh Scott coming home third. Mike Hohlbein, Josh Scott, Scottie Williams, and Darryl Banks claimed the heat races. Chris Ullery and Jim Post claimed the B-main wins.
The Block Insurance Tough Truck A-main was brought to green by the 70 of Terry Klopfenstein and the C4 of Chuck White. Klopfenstein took the early lead and led the opening lap. Chris Hicks, who started on the inside of row three, surged through the field as was ready to challenge for the lead. With just two laps in the books, Hicks took the lead and never looked back. Not only did Hicks control the lead, he was beginning to pull away from the field. Further back in the pack, Roy Miller made his way into the 3rd spot as Klopfenstein dropped back to fourth with six laps to go. Coming to the checkered flag, contact was made with Hicks causing the truck to spin into the infield coming out of turn four. This gave the win to Bill Keeler. Roy Miller came home second. Despite the spin, Chris Hicks finished in third. Both Gerry Keysor and Bill Keeler picked up the heat race wins.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts rounded out the night of racing. Rookie driver Devin Hower and Eric Wohgoman led the field to green. Both Hower and Wohgoman battled for the lead through the opening laps. The first caution flag flew for the 31 of Audrie Twining coming to a stop on the bottom side of the track. Another yellow followed for Chris Crosier. Crosier made contact with an infield tired pushing the 54C to the rear of the field for the restart. Back under green, Justin Durflinger began to battle with Brandon McDavies. McDavies and Hower made contact during the battle allowing Justin Durflinger to take the lead. Hower was forced to the rear of the field after his car came to a stop on the front stretch. The 92 was second at the time of the caution. On the restart, McDavies took the lead as Durflinger began to fall back in the field. In the end, McDavies took home the hardware. Chris Crosier finished in second with Nick Glasgow finishing in third. McDavies and Durflinger took home the heat races.
Waynesfield will be back in action next Saturday night, June 10th for the Tough Truck Royale featuring the Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing sprints, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints running wingless, Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds, and the Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts. The Block Insurance Tough Trucks will be running for a $400 to win payday. In addition, fans will have an opportunity to meet and greet with the drivers during the meet the drivers night mixer. Pit side gates open at 4PM with racing at 7PM.
