Radar Takes Close Jack Hewitt Classic Win
August 5, 2017

WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (8/5/17) – After much anticipation and waiting, the Jack Hewitt Classic made its yearly appearance at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio. The event, named after hall of famer Jack Hewitt, honors Hewitt for his positive impact on the sport of auto racing that spans decades. To honor his successful career, three classes of open wheel racing were on hand running “Hewitt” style.

The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series headlined the 9th running of the Jack Hewitt Classic running for a $3000 to win payday. Over 40 cars from all over the Midwest signed in to compete in the 24-car field. Waynesfield regular Drew Radar led the field to the green flag with fan favorite and veteran driver Dave Darland to his outside. Darland won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Pleasant Hill, Ohio’s Matt Westfall moved into the second spot with just two laps in the books. The only caution of the main came with under five laps in the books. Dallas Hewitt, Kody Swanson, and Shane Cottle got together entering turn one. All three drivers ended up long ways on the bottom side of the track. The contact flattened a tire on last weekend’s runner up Kody Swanson. Swanson took the car to the work area but ended up retiring for the night. Back under green, lap traffic began to build as the field reached the halfway point. Pole sitter Drew Radar began to make a run moving into the third spot on a slider exiting turn two. With just under ten laps remaining in the race, Radar knew it was time to make some moves. Radar pushed his 74 to the limit to claim the second spot from a strong Matt Westfall. Darland’s lead began to diminish as lap traffic became thicker. As the white flag flew, Radar was banging on Darland’s back end. The two drivers even made contact coming to the white flag. Exiting turn three on the final lap, Radar put a slider on Darland making a last ditch ever for the win. In one of the closest finishes in Waynesfield history, Drew Radar took home the victory by 0.005 seconds. Dave Darland finished in second with Kyle Simon going 13th to third. Radar and Darland shook hands in victory lane. “Underdog or not, we came here to win,” stated Radar in victory lane. Shane Cottle, Dallas Hewitt, Kody Swanson, Drew Rader, and Dave Darland claimed the heat race victories. Tyler Hewitt and Dane Lorenc picked up the B-mains. Scotty Weir clocked the fastest lap overall at a time of 12.320 seconds during group qualifications.

The Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds took the track for 20 laps of action. State of Ohio champion Jerry Bowersock and former track champion Josh Scott led the field to the opening green flag for $1000. Josh Scott took the lead entering turn one and led the opening lap. The A-main struggled to get five laps in the books due to numerous cautions in turns one and two. Jim Szekacs started the series of yellows when his car went around entering turn two. One lap would be completed before the yellow flew again for the 5T of Duane Treon. Jim Post and JD Lease found themselves in the same predicament spinning entering turns one and two. Cautions continued up until the halfway point in the feature. On the final restart with ten laps to go, Brian Post got a great jump and moved into the runner-up spot. The move triggered some big movers in the lead pack. Jeff Koz, who came into the weekend tied for second in the point standings, began to battle with Jerry Bowersock for the third spot. The top five cars started to break away from the rest of the field as they battled amongst themselves. With six laps still to go, Koz found a way around Bowersock to take third. Now in third, Koz set his sights on Post for second. Post had a plan of his own as he made a run for the lead. Reeling in Josh Scott, Post took the lead away with just three to go in the main. With the white flag in the air, Koz tried one final time to move into the second spot. The car did not stick like it needed giving the win to Brian Post of Middlepoint, Ohio. Josh Scott came home second with Jeff Koz coming home third. The top three finishers also claimed the heat race victories. Tom Conrad Jr won the B-main. Brent Hole set the quickest time in group qualifying with a time of 14.024 seconds.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints ran “Hewitt style”, wingless, for the second weekend in a row. Ron Kimmel and Ryan Barr led the field of 21 cars to the opening green flag. Aaron Leffel from row two took the lead into the first corner and led the opening lap. Ryan Barr, Aaron Leffel, and Kobe Allison started battling for top spots with just two laps in the books. The battle would come to a pause as the yellow flag flew for the 17 of Dustin Downard. Back under green, Allison claimed the second spot shuffling Barr back to battle for third. By himself, Allison turned on the jets and began to catch Leffel to make a run for the lead. On lap 8, Allison caught Leffel and claimed the lead. As the field received the halfway signal, last weekend’s feature winner Korbyn Hayslett began to make a charge to the front. Hayslett managed to slide his 1H into the third spot. The field would then come to a stop for a flip in turn four. Chris Bounds flipped end over end coming off of turn four and down the front stretch. With help from the Waynesfield safety team, Bounds was removed from his car and transported to a local hospital. Bounds has since been released from the hospital and resting at home. A lengthy cleanup followed before the race went back green. A caution and another red would follow for the 17 of Dustin Downard and the 25 of Jon Watson. Watson’s car tumbled upside down and into the infield. The final stretch of green flag racing allowed Hayslett to claim the lead with under five laps to go. The 14-year-old went on to win for the second weekend in a row. Kobe Allison finished in second with Aaron Leffel finishing in third. Reed Salony, Kobe Allison, and Korbyn Hayslett picked up the heat race wins.
