Hannagan Takes NRA Victory at Waynesfield – June 11, 2016

WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (6/11/16) – After a one-month hiatus due to heavy rains and stormy weather, drivers and fans returned to Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio.  Meet the drivers night presented by the Howard Johnson Inn of Lima was the first meet and greet race of the year, allowing fans to get up close and personal with each of the weekend warriors.  The warm temperatures combined with the cabin fever racers were feeling made for some close wheel to wheel racing in all classes.

The K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders had a strong field of 21 cars sign in to compete.  Former World of Outlaw Randy Hannagan and Butch Schroeder led the field to the opening green flag.  Hannagan took the lead into turn one and began to pull away from the field.  The lead Hannagan was able to build in the opening laps made it seem like he was going to run away with the race.  That was far from true as Tim Allison turned on the jets from his outside row three starting spot.  Allison managed to muscle around Hannagan for the lead.  With Hannagan shuffled back to second, Butch Schroeder had a new driver to battle with for the runner-up spot.  Shawn Dancer, who looked on made a run and began to fall back in the field as the race progressed.  The same story applied for Ron Blair and JR Stewart.  Blair and Stewart found some momentum midway through the race but ran out of steam as the laps began to wind down.  With under-five to go, Allsion and Hannagan were side-by-side lap after lap.  The pair traded slidejobs hoping they could get the car to stick along the cushion.  With the white flag in the air, Hannagan pushed his 22H to the cushion for the lead.  Allison tried to throw the block but could not get enough traction on the bottom giving the win to Randy Hannagan.  Max Stambaugh, who watched the front battle progress, came home second shuffling Tim Allison back to third.  Butch Schroder, Randy Hannagan, and Nick Roberts claimed the heat race victories.

The Satellite Connections Non Wing Sprint cars took the track for 25 laps of action.  The field of 20 was led to the opening green flag by the 18 of Todd Keen and the 5A of Toby Alfrey.  The race was imminently halted as Paul Dues got together with Kevin Myers, collecting Mike Miller in the process, in turn two.  All drivers climbed out from behind the wheel uninjured.  Once racing resumed, Todd Keen took the early lead with Lee Underwood and Matt Goodnight challenging for the lead.  Underwood and Goodnight went wheel-to-wheel in the early stages as Keen tried to build up a lead.  No matter what Keen did, he only could keep about a half second lead over Underwood and Goodnight.  Luke Hall, who started on the inside of row four, came out of nowhere and began slicing his way through the field.  As the field came to the cross flags, Hall began to work on Underwood and Goodnight.  Now in second, Hall set his sights on Keen.  Hall went to the cushion out of turn two and right on the backend of Keen.  The following lap, Hall went into the turn so hard, he had to hit the brakes from making contact with Keen.  Luke Hall stayed persistent and managed to get around Keen late in the race for the victory.  Matt Goodnight managed to get around Keen coming to the line to take home second.  Todd Keen was scored coming home third.  Steve Irwin, Luke Hall, and Mike Miller picked up the heat race wins.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints had a powerful field of 26 cars signed in to compete.  The A-main saw Anthony Haas and Austin Powell leading the field of 21 starters to the opening green flag.  The race started rocky for the 1H of Korbyn Hayslett.  Hayslett brought out the caution with mechanical trouble.  Chris Bounds managed to jump out to the early lead from his inside row two starting spot.  Rod Henning turned the jets on as he began to fly through the field from his inside row four starting spot.  Henning was so fast, he managed to move into the top five on the opening lap.  Chase Dunham made his way into the second spot and ready to challenge Bounds for the lead.  It took Dunham some time to reel in the driver from Sabina, Ohio who was starting to get into some lap traffic.  With under five laps to go, Dunham was knocking at the back door.  Bounds put a block on Dunham exiting turn two but Dunham managed to make the slider stick out of turn four.  With just three to go, Dunham cleared Bounds to take the lead.  Dunham went on to win the A-main.  Chris Bounds, who led much of the A-main, finished in the second spot with Rod Henning finishing in third.  Korbyn Hayslett, Chas Dunham, and Brad Strunk picked up the heat race victories.  Christopher Whipple claimed the 10 lap B-main victory.

The Block Insurance Tough Trucks continued with a strong truck count.  Matt Twining and Korey Critchfield led the field of 20 to the opening green flag.  The front row had their hands full from the drop of the green flag with a group of challengers ready to make a run for the lead.  Mike Hicks was one of the first in that group of trucks ready to make a move.  Riding the cushion out of turn one, Hicks found himself on the outside looking in at the top spot.  A move on Twining for the lead was successful moving Hicks to the lead.  With Mike Hicks in the lead, his brother Chris Hicks wanted to make the race a family affair.  Moving into the second spot, it was Hicks first and second as laps began to wind down.  Chris Hicks made a run on Mike for the lead but Mike shut the door.  Contact on the back bumper and pressure on the inside was not enough giving Mike Hicks the win.  Chris Hicks came home in second with Bill Keeler threading the needle late in the race for a third place finish.  The top three finishers also picked up the heat race victories.

The Indian Lake Outfitter Compact race was also a family affair.  The field of 12 came to the opening green flag to round out the night of racing.  James Sorrell, who started deep in the field, became slow in the very early stages of the A-main with car trouble.  The first battle to developed was one for the fifth spot between Justin Durflinger and Andru Troyer.  That battle then encompassed the front of the field making the lead back all jockey for position.  The Yoder duo, David and Harvey stole the spotlight as they moved themselves into the top spots.  Harvey led onto the race lead holding off David who was challenging behind him.  David put some throttle into turn three bumping on Harvey’s backdoor.  The dust settled with Harvey Yoder getting the win.  David Yoder came home second with Andru Troyer having a great night finishing in third.  James Sorrell and Harvey Yoder took home the heat race wins.
