Poe Gets First Ever Waynesfield Win
August 8, 2015

Children of all ages walked home with a gaggle of prizes Saturday night at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio.  Saturday’s full program of racing, presented by Indian Lake Outfitters, was the second meet the drivers night of the 2015 allowing race fans to get up close personal with their favorite driver.  In addition to autographs and hero card distribution, race teams and fans alike donated just over 30 full size backpacks, loaded with the supplies needed for a great school year.

On the racing side of things, the track was worked in nicely, giving fans an action packed night of racing.  The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts were first up for their A-main.  Current point leader David Yoder and competitive challenger Nick Glasgow led the field to the opening green flag.  Yoder won the drag race into turn one and claimed the opening lap.  Harvey Yoder, who started on the outside of row two, found himself in the second spot, shuffling Glasgow back to third.  With 1/3rd of the race complete, the Yoder squad began to battle over the top spot.  Harvey took the bottom side leaving David the topside.  Yoder squared battled lap after lap trading sliders corner by corner.  Glasgow looked on at the two battling until Harvey managed to come away with the lead with just two laps to go.  Harvey managed to hold off David to claim the A-main victory and the hard charger award.  David Yoder came home second with Nick Glasgow coming home in third.  Harvey Yoder and Austin Eaton claimed the heat race wins.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints were next to take the track for their 20 lap A-main.  Anthony Haas and Allen Poe led the field to the opening green flag.  Haas won the drag race into turn one setting himself up to dominate early in the event.  Haas would hold the top spot for only the opening lap as the field was brought to a halt.  As the field exited turn four, a group of drivers connected sending some airborne.  Bradley Ashford, Gunnar Lucius, Craig Stower, and Nick Daughrtey were the four drivers involved in the crash.  Daughrtey, who received the worst part of the crash, landed on his side requiring manual labor to get his car back down to all four wheels.  After some cleanup, the race resumed with Haas leading the way.  He would efficiently run out of steam dropping him back in the field and later off the track completely at the halfway point.  With Haas off, Allen Poe began to settle into the number one spot.  Getting comfortable in the lead paid off for Poe giving him his first ever A-main victory.  Jake Hesson, who was closing in a hurry, came home in second.  Defending points champion, Rod Henning, came home in third.  Ron Kimmel picked up the hard charger award with both Dunham and Henning coming away with the heat race victories.

The Buckeye Machine Non Wing A-main was third to push out onto the racing surface.  Luke Hall and Dallas Hewitt led the 25 lap A-main to green.  Hall won the drag race into turn one shuffling Hewitt back in the field just a bit.  Bad luck for Jim Dues brought out the first caution flag of the event as his back tire went flat exiting turn four.  A quick visit to the hot pit area got Dues back out on the racetrack for the restart.  Hewitt liked the restart as he took the top spot away from Hall passing the start cone in turn four.  Behind Hewitt and Hall, Kody Swanson and Max McGhee began to battle for the third spot.  Two laps later, McGhee managed to secure the spot.  Hewitt continued to extend his lead by almost three seconds over Hall at the midway point in the A-main.  Hewitt’s luck ran out when a group of cars got together directly in front of him blocking off the edge of the cushion.  With nowhere to go, Hewitt tried to push through the wreckage but ended up stopping on the track.  Because of stopping, Hewitt restarted at the rear of the field.  This unfortunate event put Hall back into the lead as laps began to wind down.  Later in the race, Hall would end up loosing the lead to McGhee paving the way for a last lap move for the lead.  The last ditch effort was no good giving McGhee the win.  After taking the checkered flag, McGhee was docked two spots for jumping a restart.  After that deduction, McGhee came home in third.  Kody Swanson finished in second with Luke Hall taking the victory.  Kyle Simon picked up the hard charger award with heat race wins going to Travis Hery, Dallas Hewitt, and Kody Swanson.

The Post-Agri Service UMP Modifieds hit the racetrack next for 20 laps of racing.  Two Waynesfield veterans, Jeff Kox and Matt Twining, led the field of twenty to the opening green.  Koz jumped out to the early lead and claimed the opening lap.  The first and only incident came early in the race when Jamie Philpot and Tim Cornett made contact deep in the field exiting turn one.  Upon the restart, Weasel Philpot made a move for fourth as Shawn Valenti made a move for the runner-up spot.  Weasel’s run for forth was successful as he now set his sites on the lead pack.  With just 14 laps to go in the A-main, Weasel found himself in second ready to directly challenge for the lead.  Weasel’s run was interrupted by young driver Zach Schroeder as they both began to battle for an unrelated spot.  Brian Post also decided to stick his nose making it a three-way battle just behind the leaders.  Weasel cleared Schroeder and began to reel in Koz.  The two went side-by-side for the lead with under five laps remaining. Koz led the race coming to the white flag.  On the final lap, Weasel muscled around Koz to take the victory with a pass at the line.  Jeff Koz came home in second with Brian Post taking third.  Brian Post, Weasel Philpot, and Josh Morton picked up the heat race wins.  Brandon Vaughan was victorious in the B-main.

The Block Insurance Tough Trucks were the final class to round out the full program.  Kenny Osborne and Dallas Geckle led the strong field of trucks into the first corner.  Osborne took control early as Geckle moved into the runner up spot.  Gabe Twining wanted the runner up spot as well and took it successfully with only three laps in the books.  Twining was not done yet as his 25G made a run for the lead the following lap.  Like the last, the move was successful giving Twining the top spot.  Behind Twining, Mike Sawmiller and Chris Hicks started to move through the field as they setup to make a run for the lead.  With well under ten laps remaining Sawmiller made a bold move for second.  Any space that was between Twining and Samiller was gone as the white flag flew.  Twining took the white flag but came up short on the lap that matters most giving the lead and the victory to Mike Sawmiller.  Twining came him in second with Chris Hicks finishing in third.  Ben Hower picked up the hard charger award.  Roy Miller, Chris Hicks, and Mike Sawmiller came away with the heat race wins.

Racing returns next Saturday night, August 15 with a full program featuring the Buckeye Machine Non Wing sprints, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and the Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts.  Gates open at 4PM with racing action following at 7PM.
