Hannagan Takes Home Waynesfield NRA/SOD Victory – May 23, 2015
May 23, 2015
Memorial day weekend usually marks the unofficial start to summer but at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio, it marked the first appearance of the season for the 360 sprints cars. The winged warriors of the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders and the Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt took over the high-banked clay oval for a night of nothing but the best sprint car racing in the Midwest. The Memorial Classic presented by the Howard Johnson Inn of Lima has historically shown some of the best racing of season with this year’s edition being no exception.
By the time the registration table closed, 28 NRA/SOD competitors signed in for the second of three races over the holiday weekend. Archbold, Ohio driver Kyle Sauder set the tone for the evening turning the fastest lap overall in hot laps. That run combined with his heat finish was only good enough for an inside row four starting spot in the A-main. Dustin Daggett and Randy Hannagan played their cards right early in the night landing them a front row starting spot for the A-main. Both drivers led the field of twenty to the opening green flag to get the NRA/SOD bragging rights feature underway. Daggett led the opening lap and took control of the field early leaving Hannagan in his tracks. Caleb Griffith, who started fourth found some horsepower and began to make a run for Daggett and Hannagan. Waynesfield defending track champion Rod Henning found himself in the mix as lap traffic began to surround the lead pack. Daggett weaved his way through lap traffic using different sides of the racetrack each and every lap. This movement from one end of the track to the other allowed Hannagan to close the gap between him and Daggett at the midway point. As Hannagan closed in, as did Griffith and Stambaugh making it a four way battle for the top spot. Lap traffic thickened again allowing the top four to form one pack with under ten laps remaining. Hannagan’s patience finally paid off, as his move for the lead was successful with just six laps to go in the A-main. Daggett threw everything he had at Hannagan leading up to the final lap. Entering turn two, Daggett’s car went too high on the cushion causing the car to lose control down the backstretch. Daggett managed to hold on without giving up too much track until his car lost control once again making contact with the outside wall exiting turn four. This series of bad luck pushed Daggett back to a fourth place. Hannagan picked up the victory. Griffith’s late race run gave him a second place finish. Max Stambaugh went one for two on the weekend finishing in third. Dustin Stroup finished in ninth picking up the hard charger award. Daggett, Hannagan, and Henning picked up the heat race wins with Gregg Dalman taking home the B-main victory.
The second of the sprint double header featured Waynesfield’s very own Buckeye Machine Non Wing sprints. Thirty-one drivers signed in to compete in the second points race of the 2015 season. Dallas Hewitt in the 69R and Kyle Simon in his 23S led the field of twenty to the opening green flag. Simon jumped into the lead for a brief second when the yellow flag flew with no laps complete. On the restart, Simon beat Hewitt again in the drag race into turn one. This, however, did not faze Hewitt one bit as he made another run for the lead a few laps later. As Hewitt made a run Simon, Joss Moffatt turned on the jets powering through the field from his tenth place starting spot. Hewitt and Simon began to trade slidejobs until Hewitt managed to finally close the door. His tenure in the top spot did not last long as Simon regained the lead with just ten laps to go in the main. Luke Hall added his name to the challenge late in the race as he made a run for the lead. Hewitt found his own stretch of bad luck coming to the final laps as his car dropped off the pace exiting turn two. Hewitt dropped from second to fifth in one corner before finally coming to a stop bringing out the caution. Simon could not hold off Hall and Moffatt on the restart giving up the lead and victory to Hall. Joss Moffatt picked up the runner-up spot and the hard charger award with Simon holding on to the third spot. Kyle Simon, Dallas Hewitt, Adam Cruea, and Garrett Abrams picked up the win of the heat races. Travis Hery came away with the B-man victory. Adam Conley, the driver who crashed coming out of turn four to the checkered flag was airlifted from the racetrack. At the time of this report, no information is known about his condition.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks took the track for 15 laps of action. Chris Hicks and Matt Twining led the field to the opening green flag. Twining decided to take the topside to make a run for the lead but lost several spots in the process when his truck went too high on the racing surface. A large dust cloud was kicked up as Twining finally settled midway back in the field. This setback was nothing for Twining as he began to work his way back to the front. Lap after lap, Twining took spot after spot before finding himself back in the lead pack late in the race. JJ Butler and Roy Miller started a battle directly in front of Twining making it a three way battle for second. Twining went high sandwiching Butler between himself and Miller. The battle continued to the finish where Chris Hicks picked up the win. Twining, after losing many sports early on, recovered to finish second. Roy Miller took home third and the hard charger award. Matt Twining and Chris Hicks picked up the heat race wins.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts were the final event to take track. Nick Glasgow in the 85 and Jake Phillips in the 73 led the field to the start. Glasgow took the early lead into turn one as Harvey Yoder began to challenge Phillips for second. The challenge worked out for Yoder as he jumped into the second spot. Harvey’s brother David was an outsider looking in, as he too wanted to make a run. With Glasgow fading back just a bit, David Yoder jumped into the second spot and ready to challenge his brother. Dane Arbin in the 09 found some speed as he wheeled past Glasgow late in the race for third. Arbin was unable to chase down the Yoder pair and they bounced around the track. As the final lap passed, Harvey was able to hold off his bother and pick up the victory. David Yoder finished in second with Dan Arbin finishing third. Robbie Tuttle finished seventh picking up the hard charger award. David Yoder and Dane Arbin picked up the heat race victories.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will be back in action next Saturday night, May 30 for another full program of racing including the Buckeye Machine Non Wings, Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and the Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts.
