WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (8/12/17) – Family fun took center stage this weekend at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio. Saturday’s “Meet The Drivers” night presented by Indian Lake Outfitters allowed fan to get up close and personal with their favorite weekend warrior. In addition to autographs, backpacks filled with school supplies were given away to every child in attendance to help start them on the right foot this school year. Drivers, crews, and sponsors donated the backpacks, some even donating brand new bicycles to be given away. On the track, racing was intense as the number of races remaining for point chances continues to tick down.
The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing sprints came into the weekend with a tie for the lead in points between Kyle Simon and Drew Radar. Both drivers are trailed very closely by Dallas Hewitt only 13 points back. The A-main was brought to green by the 9N of Luke Hall and the E99 of Gage Etgen. Hall won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Etgen dropped back a bit in the opening laps. Lee Underwood found himself in a battle with Etgen for the fourth spot early on in the main. The two put on quite a show, working the wheel for the spot. Back up front, Hall started to pull away from the field. Lap traffic began to grow with only ten laps into the A-main. Hall was forced to work lap traffic the remainder of the race as the A-main went start to finish under green. In the end, Hall held off last weekend’s feature winner Drew Rader to take home the victory. Drew Rader finished in second with Lee Underwood coming home third. The win was an emotional one for Hall. Hall lost his father earlier in the week and dedicated the win to his dad. “I wasn’t sure how I was even going to come to the track this week”, Hall stated in victory lane. Todd Keen and Lee Underwood picked up the heat race victories.
Despite other races in the area, the Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds continued to show their impressive car count. 36 entries were slimmed to a 20-car field for the A-main. Brian Post of Middlepoint, Ohio led the field to the opening green flag with Van Buren, Ohio driver Bill Griffith to his outside. The race into turn one created a three-wide battle for the lead coming to the line. Post was the first car scored giving him the opening lap. Terry Grilliot brought out the first caution of the race spinning around with just three laps in the books. Back under green, Matt Hamilton threaded the needle to move into the second spot on a tight slide job exiting the corner. The second caution of the race flew just after Hamilton’s move. The 55S of Zach Schroeder was involved. On the restart, the 0 of Brent Hole got a great jump and moved into the fourth spot as the field was given the halfway signal. Three laps later, Hamilton found himself taking control of the race in the top spot. Jeff Koz, who came into the weekend leading the point standings, moved into the third spot. A late race caution would allow Hole to move into third. Matt Hamilton came away with the victory. Brian Post finished in second with Jeff Koz coming home third, edging out Hole. Matt Hamilton, Bill Keeler, Brent Hole, and Brian Post picked up the heat races. Darryl Banks and David Treon, Jr. claimed the B-mains.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints took the track next for 20 laps of racing. Eddie Mehl and Anthony Haas were the scheduled starters for the main. Haas won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Back further in the pack, a battle for fifth began to form. After a tough tumble last weekend, Chris Bounds was back going wheel-to-wheel with current point lead Brad Strunk. The battle lasted for a few circuits until Strunk took the spot. Back up front, Ryan Barr moved his 21B machine into the runner-up spot as the field approached the halfway mark. Pole sitter Eddie Mehl dropped off the pace one lap shy of the halfway point bringing out the only caution of the race. On the restart, Tayte Williamson was knocking on the backdoor of Barr’s 21B machine. The close racing continued until Williamson took a corner a too hard, upsetting the handling. With just 2 laps remaining, Barr’s car began to smoke as he dropped off the pace giving the second spot up. Barr pulled the car into the infield to retire for the night. Haas went on to win the A-main. Tayte Williamson came home second due to Barr’s misfortune. Brad Strunk finished in third. Both Barr and Strunk claimed heat race wins.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks assembled for 15 laps of action. The field of trucks was brought to green by the 77 of Derick Smith and the 25G of Gabe Twining. Current points leader Chris Hicks took the lead from his outside row two starting spot to claim the opening lap. The opening circuits were relatively quiet as drivers worked to find the racing groove that worked best on a rough dirt surface. Frankie Weigt was the biggest mover and shaker in the A-main as he pushed his 24F to the limit. Weigt made a run for the second spot early and claimed the runner-up spot with just 5 laps in the books. The only yellow of the race came for pole sitter Derick Smith going around in turn four. The caution would restack the field for a restart. On that restart, Devon Helmig, who started on the inside of row five on the initial start, moved into the third spot. The leader caught lap traffic with just under 5 laps to go in the main. The traffic helped Weigt make a late race run for the lead. The battle continued to the checkered flag. The trip to victory lane went to the 71 of Chris Hicks. Frankie Weigt finished in second with Devon Helmig finishing in third. Hicks came into the weekend with a 14-point lead over veteran driver Roy Miller. Frankie Weigt and Roy Miller took home the heat race victories.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts took the track next. The 69 of Kurt Ingle and the 98K of Rob Sharpe led the field to 15 laps of racing. The race started rough as the red flag flew for the lil316 of Devon Hower. Hower’s car went up, over, and out of sight from officials off of turns one and two. Hower’s car drove back up the banking under its own power. On the restart, the first lap of the race was completed with Sharpe in the lead. Brandon McDaries, who was on the hunt for a good points night, threaded the needle in his 92 car, sending battles three wide. The yellow followed McDaries’ move for the 31A of Audie Twining. Under caution, Sharpe managed to cut down a tire forcing the car to head pit side and retire for the evening. With Sharpe out, McDaries moved into the lead. Twining brought out the caution again for a spin. Twining was forced pit side for a flat tire as well. Austin Scott managed to muscle his way into the third spot on the restart. A final caution flag would fly for Devon Hower before giving the win to Brandon McDaries. Current point leader by just two points, Justin Durflinger, finished in second with Austin Scott finishing in third. Brandon Weigt and Justin Durflinger picked up the heat race wins.
The exhibition Powder Puff Tough Truck race presented by Block Insurance rounded out the night of family fun. Courtney Stauffer came away with the win of the 2017 edition of the race. Sam Johnson came home second, Kelsi Twining third, and Abbey Werling fourth.
Another great night of racing is on tap for next Saturday Night, August 19th at Waynesfield Raceway Park. The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints will be taking their wings off for the final time in 2017. The race will pay $600 to the winner. The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing Sprints, Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and the Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts will also be in action. Pit side gates open at 4PM; grandstands at 5PM. Racing is scheduled to get underway at 7PM.
