Post, Hicks, Eaton Take Kids Night at Waynesfield
August 11, 2018
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (8/11/18) – Three divisions of racing took the track for kid’s night presented by Indian Lake Outfitters Saturday night at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio. Backpacks, bicycles, and other prizes were given away during intermission to school aged kids in attendance. Kids of all ages lined the front stretch to meet and greet with their favorite driver as well as get their hands on some of the free goodies being given away. On the track, the Vores Touring Compact Series made their only appearance on dirt in 2018. The Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds headlined the event running for $1200 to win. The Block Insurance Tough Trucks also ran for an elevated payday of $400 to win.
The Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds had a strong field of 37 drivers signing in to compete. The 20-car main event was brought to the opening green flag by the 0 of Brent Hole and the 55S of Zach Schroeder. Hole won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Wapakoneta, Ohio’s Jerry Bowersock made a move to take the second spot away from Schroeder with just four laps in the books. The first caution of the race came as the 7 of Jordan Conover came to a stop passing the flag stand. On the restart, Bowersock got a great run coming to the line going wheel-to-wheel with Hole for the top spot. Bowersock worked the cushion and managed to take the lead away from Hole. Hole would fade back in the field a bit as Brian Post jumped into the second spot as the field approached the halfway mark. Yellow flags would slow the field with just 10 laps to go in the A-main. Back under green, Jim Post worked Bowersock for the lead. On lap 12, Post managed to get a nose around Bowersock to claim the lead. For the next seven laps, Bowersock pushed his 95J machine to the max trying to reclaim the lead. Bowersock came close but Post was just too strong. Post took home the victory. Bowersock finished in second with Scottie Williams taking home third. Brian Post, Justin Coulter, Jordan Conover, and Bill Griffith took home the heat race victories. Josh Scott and Bill Keeler took home the B-mains. Josh Morton set fast time and a new track record of 13.504 seconds.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks took the track for $400 to win. The 99K of Kevin Knittle and the 21 of Dwayne Powell brought the field of 17 to the opening green flag. Knittle took control of the field and led the opening lap. Two drivers began to surge through the field early on in the event. Chris Hicks and Devon Helmig started side-by-side in row three but found themselves making a run for the lead early on in the main. Helmig’s truck was hooked up and flying early as he went to the inside and claimed the lead with just four laps in the books. Helmig would settle in as the leader until a caution flew for the 21 of Dwayne Powell. His truck went up in smoke and lost power. Back under green, Helmig continued to lead the field with Chris Hicks floating behind him. Helmig had a lot of power which kept a gap between him and Hicks. A late race caution would bunch the field back up with just one lap remaining in the race. This allowed Hicks to catch back up with Helmig for the restart. On the restart, Hicks managed to get around Helmig in the one lap shootout to the finish to take home his fourth win on the season. Helmig finished in second with Knittle finished third. Both Hicks and Helmig took home heat race victories. Hicks was fastest in time trials and set a new track record with a time of 15.778 seconds.
The Vores Touring Compacts took the track for their A-main. Harrod, Ohio’s Brandon Weigt and West Liberty, Ohio’s Gary Eaton led the field to the opening green flag. Eaton took control into turn one when the first caution of the race flew. Back under green, Eaton reclaimed the lead. Lap traffic began to build in a hurry for Eaton forcing the West Liberty driver to move from the top to the bottom and back to get around lap traffic. As Eaton fought with lap traffic, Terry Eaton moved into the second spot making it Eaton one and two in the main. As laps began to wind down, Harvey Yoder began to challenge Terry Eaton for the second spot. With the help of heavy lap traffic, Yoder took control of the second spot shuffling Eaton back to third. Despite lap traffic, Gary Eaton took home the Vores Tour main. Harvey Yoder finished in second. Terry Eaton finished in third. David Yoder, Harvey Yoder, and Terry Eaton picked up the heat race victories.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will be back in action next Saturday night, August 18th with round 2 of bookbag, school supplies, and other giveaways to kids in attendance. On the track, the Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wings, Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts will be in action. The ladies of the racing community will also jump behind the wheel for the Tough Truck Powder Puff event. Racing will get underway at 7PM.
