Sorrell Scores First Ever Win

The gap between drivers and race fans was bridged Saturday night at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio for ‘Meet the Drivers Night’ presented by American Wilderness Outfitters.  Fans of all ages took part in the meet and greet event along the front stretch of the 1/3rd mile high banked oval.  Many drivers offered autograph cards for young fans and a quick photo op showing their appreciation for the vital role fans play in the sport of auto racing.  Best Performance Motorsports was on hand as well with their souvenir trailer and a full barrel of fuel that was going home with one lucky competitor.  Fans cast their votes via Twitter and Ben Werling, driver of the 710 Tough Truck, came away with the fan vote and the 55-gallon drum of fuel courtesy of Best Performance Motorsports.  Other prizes courtesy of Skinny Kenny and J&T Photos were given to fans as part of a special evening of racing.

Two B-mains for the Buckeye Machine Non Wing Sprint cars took the track first for ten laps in distance.  Rob Guy in the 43G and Andy Conley in the 14C came away with the two transfer spots after Stratton Briggs lost the transfer spot late in the race.  Steve Irwin in the 0 and Brandon Ferguson in the 15 came away with the two transfer spots in the second B-main.  With the field set, the 9N of Luke Hall and the 23S of Kyle Simon brought the field to the green flag.  Cooper Clouse in the 14 had a great start as he made a run for the lead into turn two.  Clouse put some major pressure on the 9N of Hall as he worked the top spot.  Clouse seemed to run out of steam as he began to fall back in the field allowing the 23S of Kyle Simon to take over.  Clouse knew he was in trouble as the current point leader began to close in to make a run for the lead.  The run was successful for Simon as he took over the top spot with nine laps in the books.  Being in the lead turned tricky with just under ten to go, Simon had to make a drastic turn of the wheel off of turn four to avoid the 14C of Andy Conley who lost control battling with other lap traffic.  The 9N of Luke Hall, 14 of Cooper Clouse, and the 22S of Dallas Hewitt got together coming out of turn four sending one of the trio upside down for a brief moment.  All drivers climbed from their mangled cars and were towed off of the racing surface.  Once racing resumed Mike “The Magic Man” Miller, Todd Keen, and Matt Westfall began a three way battle for the second spot.  Miller used his magic to work the cushion as Westfall tried to put the slider on the low side.  The battle allowed Kyle Simon to pull away from the field and pick up the victory.  Mike Miller finished in second and Todd Keen in third after a close finish at the line.  Steve Irwin, on his first night out, picked up the hard charger award advancing eleven spots in the A-main.

The Block Insurance Tough Trucks sure did not disappoint the fans as they took the track for their 15 lap feature.  The 60 of Jerry Sawmiller and the C01 of Kenny Osborne led the field to the green flag.  Hicks squared lined up in row two and wasted no time showing the power of the Hicks brothers outfit.  Osborne battled with Sawmiller for a majority of the opening laps until his truck began to fade.  Mike and Chris Hicks saw the opportunity and capitalized on it.  Coming out of turn two, Mike Hicks decided to take the inside forcing Chris to the cushion.  The momentum built up down the backstretch propelled the Hicks duo up on the 60 of Sawmiller.  Sawmiller was fighting the wheel off of turn four as the group went three wide for the top spot.  Sawmiller was able to keep his truck under control as he raced into turn two, sandwiched between Mike and Chris Hicks.  Sawmiller caught a break when a caution for debris came out and problemes for Mike Hicks arose.  WIth Hicks heading pitside for service, Sawmiller was able to breathe a bit easier coming to the restart.  Sawmiller was able to hold off the competition knocking at the backdoor until a late race red flag flew for the 0J of Shane Jacobs who flew over the banking in turn two.  The trip over the banking did not phase him one bit as he pushed the truck to its limit coming back up the banking and onto the racing surface.  The 60 of Jerry Sawmiller picked up the victory and a visit to Best Performance Motorsports Victory Lane.  The 71 of Chris Hicks finished second after falling behind Sawmiller on the restart.  The 20K of Bill Keeler finished in third.  Sawmiller commented in victory lane that he saw Hicks on both sides of him but did not have a chance to think about what was happening.  The 1J of J.J Butler picked up the hard charger award for finishing seventh and advancing seven spots.

A good field of Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds took to the track for their 20 lap feature.  The 58P of Jim Post and the 4J of David Treon led the field to the green flag with the second of the Post clan, Brian, and Matt Westfall looking in from row two.  Post took off with the early lead.  Treon stepped on the throttle and made a quick and smooth run for the lead.  Treon took control of the lead moving Post back to second.  Scott Bowersock in the 10 car experienced some mechanical problems as he pulled his car into the infield.  His dive to the infield left the field green until the 44 of Zach Schroeder brought out the caution as something snapped on the car.  His car was taken to the trailer and never returned to the event.  On the restart, Post squared and Westfall were ready to make another run for the lead.  Westfall got the best jump on the restart and moved his way into second with no resistance.  He set his sights on Treon and began to set up his move on the highside.  The trading of slidejobs worked out best for Westfall as he took the top spot from Treon midway through the event.  This move put Treon in a tough position to both chase for the lead and hold off a group of fierce competitors looking to challenge.  Post did just that with Bill Keeler riding on his shirt tail.  All moves froze when the 0 of Brent Hole turned his car in the reverse direction off of turn four.  No one had anything for Westfall allowing him to pick up the two second victory.  Post, Treon, and Keeler battled all the way to the checkered flag for second, third, and fourth.  Post came away with the second place finish with Treon finishing third.  Josh Greber in the 93 finished just outside the top ten picking up the hard charger award.

All sixteen Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints made the call for their 20 lap feature event.  Both 28 cars of Chris Bounds and Rod Henning led the field to the green flag.  Chris Bounds jumped out to the early lead over veteran driver Henning and began to build up a slight lead.  The E99 of Gage Etgen, who started on the outside of row 5, spun his car around bringing out the first caution of the event.  The IVO of Andrew Heitkamp had a similar experience in the same area of turn two bringing out the caution on the restart.  Trial number two was good for two exciting laps before the yellow flew for the third time for the 3D of Cody Downard.  Downard got a little close to the inside apron causing him to lose control of the car.  Before Downard’s caution, Gary Campbell in the 14 made a great run on Henning and managed to take over the lead.  That lead lasted for only a moment as Henning through a slider that stuck.  The 55 of Rob Winks, who has had one of the most difficult rollercoaster seasons, brought out the red flag when his car went upside exiting turn four.  He climbed out from behind the wheel under his own power disgusted at the damage to his car.  The race would stay green with much of the focus redirecting to the second, third, and fourth spots.  Campbell and Bounds ran after each other late in the feature.  As did the 66 of Chase Dunham and the 8JR of JR Wood.  Rod Henning expanded his points lead by coming away with the victory.  Gary Campbell finished in second.  Chris Bounds posted a third place finish.  The 4 of Tyler Street advanced five spots to finish eighth claiming the Foz Speed Partz hard charger award.

A great night of racing came to a close with the Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts and their 15 lap feature.  James Sorrell in the 34 and the 66Z of Matt McKinnon brought the field of sixteen to the green flag.  Sorrell had the car hooked up and flying as he jumped out to the early lead and began to pull away from McKinnon.  Lucas Fuller in the 74 and the 16 of Jason Long began to battle behind McKinnon for the third spot.  Justin Durflinger and Jordan Iimas decided to take on a battle of their own.  When the yellow flag waved on lap seven, Sorrell had close to a four second lead over the field.  Fuller, who was battling with Long, lost power and stopped the car on the arpon.  The restart was going to be a difficult one for Sorrell as he was faced with holding off some stiff competition that had made their way through the field.  Sorrell took the green like a seasoned veteran and focused on maintaining the lead.  He did just that and came away with his first ever victory.  When talking to the fans in Best Performance Motorsports Victory lane, Sorrell was excited but speechless about his first ever victory.  The 17 of Justin Durflinger picked up the second place finish with Jordan Iiams in the 518 scored in third.  Cosy Sanders in the 27S picked up the hard charger award and a seventh place finish.

Racing moves to Sunday next weekend at Waynesfield Raceway Park for the 32nd annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Ohio Logistics.  Waynesfield will host the All Star Circuit of Champions in their second of nine days of racing all around the State of Ohio.  The Block Insurance Tough Trucks are also on the card for this must see event of the year.  Adult general admission is just $22, kids 11-15 are $11, and kids 10 & Under FREE.  Pit passes for all ages are just $35.  Times for this special Sunday night program will be the same as any normal event with pit side gates swinging open at 4PM and grandstand gates at 5PM.  The first green flag of the night flies at 7PM.  Full information on this event is available online at or
