Swanson, Tilton, Lines, Hicks, Smith Take Waynesfield’s 15th Opener – April 22, 2017
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (4/22/17) – Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio celebrated 15 years of racing Saturday night as the green flag opened a new season. The track, which sits in the cornfields of Waynesfield, Ohio, welcomed fans with an impressive car count and some of the best dirt racing in the Midwest.
The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing sprint cars started a field of 20 for 25 laps of racing. Ty Tilton and Kody Swanson led the field to the opening green flag. Swanson took no time taking the lead and led the opening lap. Luke Hall muscled his way into second from his outside row two starting spot. Dallas Hewitt then made a run-on Hall for the second spot. The move was successful giving him second with just five laps to go in the main. Despite heavy lap traffic on the final laps, Kody Swanson came away with the 3.8 second victory. Dallas Hewitt finished in second with Landon Simon finishing in third. The A-main went caution free completing in just under six and a half minutes. Drew Rader, Landon Simon, and Dallas Hewitt picked up the heat wins. Todd Keen picked up the B-main victory.
The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints started 19 in the A-main. The field was brought to green by the 17P of Austin Powell and the 65 of Chris Bounds. The feature started rough with a caution coming to the start. On the restart, Bounds took the early lead and claimed the opening lap. Lima, Ohio’s Kobe Allison used a second restart later in the race to his advantage to advance into third spot. Ty Tilton, another Lima driver, jumped into the lead as the field approached the halfway point. Veteran driver Rod “Hotrod” Henning began to surge through the field. Henning managed to grab the third spot and then the second spot after a late race restart. In the end, Ty Tilton came away with the victory. Rod Henning finished in second with Kobe Allison finishing in third. The same three drivers picked up the heat race victories.
The Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds had a strong field of 20 cars make the call for the A-main. The 20 lap event was brought to green by the K9 of Scott Gerdeman and the 20K of Bill Keeler. Keeler won the drag race into turn one and led the opening lap. Defending track champion Josh Scott found where his car worked best as he began to reel in the lead pack. Meanwhile, Randy Lines managed to put a slider on Keeler to take the lead. Scott jumped into the second spot as the field approached the halfway point. As the cross flags were displayed, Line’s 1.3 second lead began to diminish. Scott never found the momentum to overtake Lines giving him the checkered flag. Erny Gingerich, who started on inside of row 5, took home second on a late race pass. Josh Scott came home in third. Randy Lines, Josh Scott, Bill Keeler, and Scott Gerdeman picked up the heat race wins. Tim Meine and Terry Hull picked up the B-mains.
The Block Insurance Tough Trucks took the track for their 15 lap feature. Ben Hower and Gerry Keysor lead the field to the opening green flag. Chris Hicks, who started on the inside of row two, got a great jump on the start propelling him to the lead early on. A series of yellows followed including spins by Kelcey Helmig, Chuck White, and Christopher Gveca. The sole red flag of the event came with three laps complete when the 24F of Frankie Weigt rolled his truck upside down exiting turn three. Weigt was OK and was towed off the racing surface. Back under green, Roy Miller started to track down Ben Hower creating a battle for the second spot. Once the dust settled, Chris Hicks picked up the win. Ben Hower finished in second with Roy Miller finishing in third. Roy Miller and Chris Hicks also picked up the heat race victories.
The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts had a strong field of cars despite the number of events happening in the racing community. James Sorrell and Matt McKinnon lead the field of 19 to the opening green flag. Sorrell took the early lead and led the opening lap. Justin Durflinger, celebrating his birthday at the track, began to battle for the second spot. Durflinger continued his run moving into the top spot with three laps in the history books. In the process, James Sorrell got shuffled back from the top spot to just inside in the top five. Nick Glasgow, who started on the outside of row four, started to make a run for the lead. The run was successful giving Glasgow the lead with just six laps complete. One caution followed before giving the win to Dalton Smith. Smith started dead last in the A-main lineup. Nick Glasgow finished in second with Brandon McDavies finishing in a close third. Nick Glasgow, Ryan O’Kuley, and Justin Durflinger picked up the heat race victories.
