Underwood Scores First Sprint Win at Jack Hewitt Classic – August 4th, 2018

WAYNESFIELD, OH (8/04/2018) – In what will forever go down as one of the wildest Jack Hewitt Classics ever at the Waynesfield Raceway Park, one thing that was certain all night was Lee Underwood was fast. After winning his heat race and starting seventh in the BOSS Classic feature, the driver out of Troy, OH was able to storm himself up front, passing drivers like Kody Swanson, Drew Rader, and Dallas Hewitt to pick up his first ever career victory in a 410 sprint car. Underwood, former mini sprint driver, not only walked away with a check of $3000, but he joins the names of other Jack Hewitt Classic winners, putting himself in the same category as Thomas Mezzeraul, Justin Grant, Jonanthan Hendrick, and NASCAR driver Kyle Larson. Also, seeing their largest car count of the season, the AMSA Mini Sprints competed with a strong 33 car field. Chett Gehrke, the driver out of Shepherdsville, KY fought his way through the night, and battled hard to put himself up front and ahead in victory lane. Those drivers all earning $100 show up money, courtesy of the Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midgets. Additionally on the card was the return of the UMP Modified’s who showed up with a stout 29 car field, all racing for an increased $1000 to win. Like other features on the season, this one also did not disappoint. Josh Scott, the unofficial first ever track champion at “The Field”, returned back to action to show he still knows his way around the 1/3rd mile, leading all 20 laps in a caution filled feature. Scott who qualified 5th and finished 2nd in his heat race, proved no amount of time away has taken any speed out of his car.

The first feature of the night was led with the Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints. This 20 lap feature started with two massive red flag accidents, that managed to wipe out multiple cars that were scheduled to start towards the tail. The second red flag though took out Tayte Williamson, the 14 year old driver who was scheduled to start 2nd. Once the feature was able to get underway, Jon Steed and Gunnar Lucius put on a battle worth the price of admission alone. Those two drivers would battle through the first half of the race, but trouble for the 7 of Steed sent him up the high side with 12 laps to go, and would take him out of the battle for the lead. As the field continued to spread themselves out, this opened the door for Chett Gehrke to find his way up front, battling Lucius for the lead. With nearly 10 laps to go, Gehrke found himself in striking position and never looked back from there. Additional cars on the move were the 3 of Alex Watson who started 8th and finished in the top three, and Brad Strunk who is a Waynesfield regular. He managed to find himself finishing 6th, after starting 16th. The AMSA Mini Sprints return back to action on August 25th, as they join the card for the first of two Championship Showdowns.

After waiting out the lengthy delays in the previous feature, the 30 lap Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Car Series feature event did not disappoint as usual, with the Jack Hewitt Classic finding itself back in the capital of Slide Job city. Dave Darland and Kody Swanson set the field as those two cars would battle themselves for the first two laps. Trouble for the 21S of Swanson would send his car falling back into the pack, which left the door open for Luke Hall, Drew Rader, Dallas Hewitt, and Bill Rose to begin their trek towards the front. As those cars would battle themselves, 7th starting Lee Underwood would quietly make his way forward, picking off each car one by one. Following two cautions and able to find two great restarts, Underwood battled with Darland, and eventually took over the lead with just 10 laps to go. Once he found himself out front, it was clean air the rest of the way for the driver out of Troy, OH. Not only was there a great battle up front, but multiple cars saw themselves moving forward. Kyle Simon who started 13th almost cracked the top five with his 6th place finish, and the story of the night was the 00 of Thomas Messeraull. T-Mez a two time Hewitt Classic winner, had trouble at the start of the race which sent him starting at the tail. He managed to climb himself up into the top 10, finishing 8th respectfully. The BOSS Non-wing return to action next Friday and Saturday nights, as they join the headlining card for the Great Lakes Dirt Nationals, at the Mansfield Motor Speedway. The Quest Federal Credit Union Non-Wing Sprints return to action in two weeks around the 1/3rd mile, as they will be apart of the Grass Roots Special on August 18th.

Former track champion Josh Scott proved himself yet again, showing he has not forgotten his way around the 1/3rd mile, leading all 20 laps in the Satellite Connections UMP Modified feature event. While this feature saw multiple cautions and momentum delays, Scott was able to get a fantastic restart each time, never seeing another car closer than rear bumper. The battle was found in the rest of the pack, as Brent Hole, Shane O’Conner, and Brad Eitniear would create a fantastic three car clash behind your leader. Those three would use every inch of the race track, trying to find some groove to be able to not only track down Scott, but push themselves ahead of one another. The story on the race track though was the incredible amount of passing down by Scottie Williams, and David Treon JR. Williams who started 13th pushed his way into the top five finishing 4th, and Treon JR started dead last, and managed to pass eight other cars finishing 12th. Scott cashing in on the pay day though for the Modified’s, taking home the increased $1000 purse. The UMP Mods return to action next Saturday August 11th paying an increased $1200 to win.

Next Saturday is the return of one of the most anticipated events of the season with the annual Kids Night on August 11th. On the card will be the Satellite Connections UMP Modifieds with an increased purse of $1200 to win, the Vores Touring Compacts, and the Tough Trucks paying $500 to win. This night will be full of giveaways and prizes, as each child that enters through the gates will receive a backpack full of school supplies.
